Optimizing Outcomes for Children who Present with Hypotonia

Group Study Course

This continuing education course is designed to help physical therapists implement evidence aimed at improving motor skills and participation for children who present with hypotonia. The program is divided into three separate sessions approximately 8 weeks apart. All sessions will be interactive and include case-based discussions and video review on successes and challenges related to knowledge-to-action. Participants will complete readings and brief assignments prior to participation in each session.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Operationally define Hypotonia

  2. Describe potential impacts of Hypotonia on development of motor skill and participation 

    • Biomechanical

    • Musculoskeletal

    • Neurologic

  3. Compare and contrast optimal versus sub optimal movement patterns in children, with a focus on gait and advanced motor skills such as running and jumping

  4. Examine and implement reliable and valid tests and measures for children who present with Hypotonia to ascertain severity and underlying pathology

  5. Implement effective interventions to improve gait and other motor skills in children who present with Hypotonia

  6. Integrate course information into clinical practice for self and colleagues so that practice change is sustained, including participation in developing a decision-making algorithm 

    • Create a screen and checklist that includes red flags to guide clinical decision making for children who present with Hypotonia

    •  Develop a rack card system that includes:

      • Key evidence-based intervention activities

      • Information to share with families (and other health care providers) on the risks of intervening versus not intervening early
