Description

This course will give an overview of concussion management with a focus on children, ages 5 to 17     . Participants will view an online, asynchronous lecture- style overview of concussions including the metabolic cascade and principles for evidence-based treatment and recovery. This will be followed by two 1-hour online sessions focused on journal article reviews and application of knowledge into clinical practice. Participants will complete a knowledge assessment and two journal article reviews as components of the course.

Culture Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define and explain the mechanics and effects of a concussion and the metabolic cascade.
  2. Describe the differences that age plays in the effects and prognosis post-concussion.
  3. Develop and implement a sample treatment plan for pediatric patients post-concussion based on the latest evidence.

 

Note: This course will provide 6 CEU credits. Participants must attend and participate in all sessions and successfully complete all course assignments in order to receive the CEU credits.

 

Course Instructors

 

Cheryl Mitchell, PT, DPT founded Inspiration Physical Therapy and Consulting (IPTC) in January 2022 with the mission of spreading awareness of evidence based Concussion Management and management of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome through continuing education courses, online education and one-on-one quality care. She has demonstrated a professional pursuit of learning as shown by certification in Concussion Management, SFMA, Pelvic Floor, Telehealth, Astym, Graston techniques and more. Prior to founding IPTC, she worked as senior clinical manager in operations while building the company’s multiple state comprehensive Concussion Program that included marketing, writing and presenting PT and PTA Continuing Education Courses from fundamentals through certification, developing internal processes for quality control, developing and presenting CEUs for Nurse Case Managers and coordination and collaboration with members of a comprehensive medical team. Joseph Schreiber, PT, PhD, FAPTA is a former Professor of Physical Therapy at Chatham University and former President of the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy of the APTA between 2011 and 2017. Dr. Schreiber has published numerous articles related to pediatric physical therapy and the implications of evidence-based practice and knowledge translation for physical therapists. He is the co-editor and a chapter author in the pediatric physical therapy textbook Campbell’s Physical Therapy for Children, 6th edition. He has presented multiple continuing education sessions at numerous local, state, national, and international conferences on effective clinical practice and knowledge translation strategies in pediatric physical therapy.
