Course Description:

This collaborative learning endeavor is designed to improve teaching and student learning, optimize the impact of learning activities, and support successful entry-level physical therapy education course development and/or implementation. This course will include both asynchronous development and refinement of materials to inform and support optimal teaching and learning, and subsequent weekly synchronous 1-hour Zoom sessions to further review and discuss these materials. These weekly sessions will be interactive and include case-based discussions and video of teaching & learning activities as appropriate.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Plan and implement an effective course in a professional physical therapy program.
    1. Create learning objectives scaled to the needs of the learners and focused on the required course outcomes.
    2. Implement sequential learning activities within and across class sessions that effectively engage learners, including lecture-based, active learning, and laboratory/ skill-based activities. This will explicitly include use of video to reinforce learning and key concepts.
    3. Assess the impact of learning activities within and across class sessions.
  2. Integrate best practices in evidence-based teaching and learning into course activities.

 

 Course Schedule:

Asynchronous Learning- 1 hour per week Synchronous Zoom Sessions- 1 hour per week
 

Review Bloom’s Taxonomy Resources and integrate into review of course objectives; consider developing individual class session objectives

Week 1

Course objectives- review, analysis, and modification/ update as needed (within courses and larger curriculum)

 

Create planning template for courses and class sessions

Week 2

Individual Class Session Planning- review template and modify as needed; discuss application for individual sessions

 

Apply planning template for specific course and/or class session- course selection based on needs of the learner

Week 3

Review and feedback on planning template(s)

 

Review and update class materials for Key Content Area sessions (based on the needs of the learner)

Week 4

Review and feedback on content/ session planning for Key Content Area

 

Review and update class materials for Key Content Area sessions

Week 5

Review and feedback on content/ session planning for Key Content Area

 

Review and update class materials for Key Content Area sessions

Week 6

Review and feedback on content/ session planning for Key Content Area

 

Review and update of class assessment activities- test questions, lab check-off/ practicals, etc

Week 7

Review and feedback on assessment of student knowledge, skills, and attitudes

Comprehensive review with emphasis on areas for additional focus and refinement
